Some entrepreneurial journeys begin with a market opportunity. Munish Kumar’s journey began with a deeply personal experience.
When his father lost both hands in an accident, Munish witnessed firsthand the difficulties involved in finding a prosthetic solution that was functional, comfortable and affordable. That experience eventually led him to ask a simple but important question: Why shouldn’t advanced technology be accessible to people who need it most?
That question became the foundation for Exobot Dynamics, a Delhi-based deep-tech startup developing bionic limbs and assistive technologies.
From Personal Experience to Innovation
Munish began working on the project in 2019, while pursuing his PhD in Mechanical Engineering. What started as a research and engineering challenge gradually developed into a larger mission to create advanced prosthetic technology for people with upper-limb amputations. Exobot Dynamics was incorporated in 2022.
Rather than accepting the limitations of conventional prosthetics, Munish focused on combining mechanical engineering, robotics, electronics and biosensing to create more capable devices.
The company’s bionic-hand technology uses EMG sensors to detect electrical signals generated by the user’s muscles and translate those signals into hand movements.
Building Affordable Bionic Technology in India
One of Munish’s key objectives has been to develop sophisticated prosthetic technology in India while keeping accessibility at the centre of the product design.
Exobot’s current GripX hand, for example, is designed to be lightweight, durable and suitable for everyday use. The company describes it as a myoelectric prosthetic hand weighing under 300 grams, with sensor-based control, a rotating wrist and all-day battery capability.
The company’s newer Exobot X1 takes the technology further, combining multi-articulated finger movement, EMG and force-sensing technology and AI-driven grip adaptation. The X1 is currently progressing through testing and early-access development.
From Prototype to Real-World Technology
For a hardware startup, developing a working prototype is only the beginning.
Munish and his team have worked through prototyping, testing, clinical validation and manufacturing challenges while developing Exobot’s products. The company has been supported by organisations including AIC IIT Delhi and IHFC IIT Delhi, and has worked with technology and manufacturing ecosystems to move its products closer to commercial deployment.
This journey illustrates the difficulty of building a deep-tech company in India: unlike software products, medical robotics requires engineering, hardware development, testing, clinical involvement and manufacturing.
Recognition in 2026
Munish’s work received significant recognition in 2026 when Exobot Dynamics won the FICCI–Mercedes-Benz Bharat Innovation & Business Ideas Challenge. Munish described the recognition as a personal milestone because the company’s mission was born from his father’s experience with limb loss.
The company also received ₹30 lakh in funding from Mercedes-Benz following the challenge. Exobot identified 20 people with disabilities who were to receive its device free of cost as part of its impact efforts.
Technology With a Human Purpose
What makes Munish Kumar’s story particularly compelling is the connection between his personal experience and the technology he is building.
Exobot isn’t developing robotics simply as an engineering exercise. Its products are intended to help people regain greater independence in everyday activities.
The company’s current technology combines robotics, biosensing, AI and mechanical engineering to create prosthetic systems that respond to the user’s own muscle signals.
For Munish, the objective is bigger than creating a sophisticated prosthetic hand.
It is about making advanced assistive technology more accessible, practical and usable for people who have traditionally had limited options.
A New Generation of Indian Deep-Tech Entrepreneurs
Munish Kumar represents a growing group of Indian entrepreneurs working on difficult problems in deep technology, robotics and medical innovation.
His journey demonstrates how a personal problem can become the starting point for a technology company — and how engineering can be directed toward solving challenges that have a direct impact on people’s lives.
