Dr. Aprajita Kumari: Building Technology to Keep Fresh Produce Fresh
Dr. Aprajita Kumari — CEO & Head of Operations, Fruvetech
Startup Leader · Woman Entrepreneur
Agritech · Biotechnology · Post-Harvest Technology
India produces enormous quantities of fruits and vegetables, but a significant portion of fresh produce can be lost after harvest because of spoilage, inadequate storage and transportation challenges. For Dr. Aprajita Kumari, this was not simply an agricultural problem—it became the starting point for an entrepreneurial journey.
Today, she leads Fruvetech, a Delhi-based agritech startup developing technologies designed to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables and reduce post-harvest losses. Fruvetech was founded in 2021 and is recognised as a Startup India venture.
From Research to Entrepreneurship
Dr. Aprajita Kumari holds a PhD in plant biotechnology and has a research background in plant signalling and respiration. During her academic years, witnessing agricultural produce perish because of inadequate storage and transportation conditions helped inspire her to explore solutions to the problem.
Her experiments began in 2019, eventually leading to the incorporation of Fruvetech in 2021.
The journey illustrates how scientific research can move beyond laboratories and become the foundation of a practical business.
Tackling India’s Post-Harvest Losses
Fruvetech focuses on one of the less visible challenges facing India’s agricultural economy: what happens after the crop has been harvested.
Its technology is designed to help fruits and vegetables remain fresh for longer during storage, transportation and distribution.
Among the company’s products is FruveFresh, a sachet-based freshness-enhancing formulation designed to be placed inside produce packaging. Fruvetech says its solutions are intended to work without relying entirely on conventional cold-chain infrastructure.
The company’s broader technology portfolio also includes FruveTrans storage solutions and BerrySafe liners, aimed at reducing spoilage across different stages of the supply chain.
Turning Biotechnology into a Business Solution
What makes Aprajita’s journey particularly interesting is the combination of scientific research and entrepreneurship.
Fruvetech’s work focuses on developing practical technologies that can be used by farmers, traders, retailers and other participants in the agricultural supply chain.
The company has also developed patented technology related to shelf-life enhancement of agricultural products. A published Indian patent application lists Aprajita Kumari among the inventors of a gel-based formulation designed to enhance the shelf life of agricultural products.
Growing Beyond the Laboratory
Fruvetech’s technology has moved into real-world trials and commercial applications.
The company reports that its solutions are being deployed across the fresh-produce supply chain, while its products have been tested with fruits including bananas, mangoes, avocados, blueberries, guavas and dragon fruit.
Fruvetech has also reported growing demand from farmers, traders and retailers looking for ways to reduce post-harvest losses and preserve produce for longer periods.
Recognition as a Woman Entrepreneur
Aprajita’s entrepreneurial journey has also received recognition from India’s startup ecosystem.
In 2026, Fruvetech was recognised among the Top 50 Women-led Startups of the herSTART 4th Edition, with Aprajita representing the company as its CEO.
The company was also highlighted by NASSCOM Emerge 50 in 2026 among emerging technology ventures, adding further recognition to its work in agritech and deep technology.
Building a More Sustainable Food Supply Chain
The significance of Fruvetech’s work extends beyond simply keeping fruits fresh.
Reducing post-harvest spoilage can potentially mean more produce reaching consumers, better utilisation of farmers’ harvests, reduced wastage and improved efficiency across the supply chain.
This makes Aprajita’s business journey an example of how scientific innovation can address a practical economic and agricultural challenge.
From Scientist to Startup Leader
Dr. Aprajita Kumari’s story demonstrates a path increasingly visible in India’s startup ecosystem: scientists becoming entrepreneurs and transforming research into market-oriented solutions.
At Fruvetech, she is helping lead the transition from laboratory research to commercial agritech applications, with the broader objective of reducing food losses and improving the value of agricultural produce.
For IndianLeaders, her journey represents more than the story of an agritech company. It is the story of a woman scientist who turned an agricultural challenge into an entrepreneurial opportunity.
